Overview of all Pineview Atom based Motherboards

low cost meets low power consumption and small form factor

The market for low power draw (below 20 Watts), passively cooled, small form factor motherboards was until recently dominated by rather expensive VIA boards and to a smaller extent AMD (with the Geode). Even last years' first generation Atom did not fit into this category as first generation Atom motherboards (with the commonly used power-hungry Intel 945GC chipset or even with the Nvidia ION) typically consumed 20-30 Watts and therefore usually needed a fan on the chipset.

The new Pineview Atom combined with the new NM10 Express (formerly Tiger Point) single-chip-chipset on the other hand, makes Atom based motherboards that only draw 12-15 Watts a reality, which means they can be passively cooled and used for purposes where they need to be running 24/7, while minimizing the impact on the electricity bill.

Apart from industrial uses, these new Pineview Atom motherboards are ideal in combination with Linux to make small, low power consumption, 24/7 home mail or web servers, BT-clients, file servers, home surveillance appliances, routers, firewalls or even small PCs for web browsing and email.

So far, Intel has released four Pineview Atom chips:

  • Atom N450 - single core, 512K Cache, 1.66 GHz, 5.5 Watts TDP, 7 Watts total TDP

  • Atom N470 - single core, 512K Cache, 1.83 GHz, 6.5 Watts TDP, 8 Watts total TDP

  • Atom D410 - single core, 512K Cache, 1.66 GHz, 10 Watts TDP, 12 Watts total TDP

  • Atom D510 - dual core, 1MB Cache, 1.66 GHz, 13 Watts TDP, 15 Watts total TDP

Total TDP is the TDP (thermal design power) of the Atom cpu and the NM10 Express Southbridge (the single-chip-chipset of the Intel Pine Trail platform) combined. The Atom N450 and N470 are targeted at netbooks, while the D410 and the D510 are meant to be used on mini-ITX motherboards and nettops.

Here is an overview of all Pineview Atom based Motherboards that have been announced or released so far. We aim to keep this list complete and up-to-date, so if you know of any others, please let us know.
Please note this overview is limited to standard PC form factor motherboards (ITX, DTX, ATX and their variants), industrial format boards (SBC, COM Express, PC/104, etc.) will not be listed here.

Asus AT5NM10-I motherboard
Asus AT5NM10-I
Asus AT5NM10-I - [Asus product page]

The Asus AT5NM10-I is a very basic entry level board similar to the Intel D510MO and the Foxconn D51S. Compared to the Intel board, it even lacks the mini-PCIe slot, therefore we could see this board competing only on price, providing it's priced below the Intel board.
That said, the presence of a LVDS header and it's chunky heat-sink could make it interesting for industrial applications.
CeBIT 2010 news: two variants of this board have been spotted at CeBIT, the AT4NM10-I (a single core D410 Atom cpu variant) and the AT5NM10-I IPC geared towards industrial applications with 4 RS232 ports, CF-card slot, on-board DC-DC power converter, but without PCI slot.

Specification: D510 cpu, 2 SATA ports, 1 PCI slot, 2 DDR2 667/800 DIMM slots (4 GB max), VGA port and LVDS header, 2 PS/2 ports, 2 RS232 (1 port and 1 header), 1 parallel port, 8 USB 2.0 ports (4 on back-panel, 4 on-board headers), 1 Gigabit Ethernet port, IDT73C 5.1 HD audio (line-in, line-out, mic-in rear ports, S/PDIF out and front panel header), mini-ITX form factor

ECS TIGT-I motherboard
ECS TIGT-I
ECS TIGT-I / TIGT-I2 - ECS product pages: [ TIGT-I ] [ TIGT-I2 ]

The ECS (Elitegroup) TIGT series of Pineview boards consists of two variants, one with a single core D410 cpu and one with a dual-core D510 cpu. The only slightly remarkable feature is the presence of a PCIe x1 slot which allows the use of a fast SATA/eSATA controller card for additional SATA ports, or the addition of a better graphics card.

Specification: D410 (TIGT-I2) or D510 (TIGT-I) cpu, 1 PCIe x1 slot, 2 DDR2 667/800Mhz DIMM slots (4 GB max), 2 SATA ports, 10/100 Fast Ethernet (RealTek 8103EL), 8 USB ports (4 on back-panel, 4 on-board headers), VGA port, 2 PS/2 ports, 1 RS232 port, 1 parallel port, Realtek ALC662 5.1 HD audio (line-in, line-out, mic-in rear ports, S/PDIF out and front panel header), mini-ITX form factor

Foxconn D41S motherboard
Foxconn D41S
Foxconn D41S / D51S - Foxconn product pages: [ D41S ] [ D51S ]

The Foxconn D41S is a plain single-core Atom motherboard. It's spec is slightly better than that of the Intel D410PT single-core board, but still nothing to write home about.
The D51S is identical to the D41S apart from the dual-core cpu and the cpu fan. Unfortunately Foxconn has opted for a rather small cpu heat-sink which means a fan is required to keep the cpu cool on the dual-core version.

Specification: D410 (D41S) or D510 (D51S) cpu, 1 PCI slot, 2 SATA ports, 2 DDR2 667/800Mhz DIMM slots (4 GB max), 1 Gigabit Ethernet port, 8 USB ports (4 on back-panel, 4 on-board headers), 2 PS/2 ports, 2 RS232 (1 port and 1 header), 1 IrDA header, 1 TPM header, VGA port, 1 parallel port, 5.1 channel HD audio (line-in, line-out, mic-in rear ports, S/PDIF out and front panel header), mini-ITX form factor

Supermicro X7SPA series ( -L / -H / -HF )
Supermicro product pages: [ X7SPA-L ] [ X7SPA-H ] [ X7SPA-HF ]

The Supermicro X7SPA series uses the ICH9(R) southbridge instead of the usual NM10 Express, which means it features 6 SATA ports (4 on the X7SPA-L). Together with the presence of 2 Intel 82574L Gigabit LAN chips (1 on the X7SPA-L) these boards are very well suited as quiet, low-power, file servers both at home and in SMEs, while the X7SPA-L is also geared towards embedded IPC use. The X7SPA-HF even offers IPMI (v1.5 / 2.0) with KVM support which means it can be completely managed remotely over the network. The X7SPA-HF has an on-board Matrox G200eW GPU while the other two boards use the standard integrated Intel GMA3150.

Specification:D510 cpu (D410 on the X7SPA-L), 6 SATA ports (4 on the X7SPA-L), 2 DDR2 667 SO-DIMM slots (4 GB max), 8/10 USB 2.0 ports (2 on back-panel (4 on the X7SPA-L), 5 on-board headers, 1 Type A connector), 1 PCIe x16 (4 lanes) slot, VGA port, LVDS connector (X7SPA-L only), 2 PS/2 ports, 2/4 RS232 ports (1 port and 1 header, 3 headers on the X7SPA-L), 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports (1 on the X7SPA-L), Realtek ALC888 5.1 HD audio (CD-in + front panel header on X7SPA-L only), mini-ITX form factor

Zotac NM10-DTX WiFi motherboard
Zotac NM10-DTX WiFi
Zotac NM10-DTX WiFi (NM10-B-E) - [Zotac product page]

The Zotac NM10-DTX WiFi is the first Pineview Atom board that got us all enthusiastic!
Zotac has really taken the Pine Trail platform to it's limits by offering 6 SATA connectors (and to top it off even one eSATA port!) and 2 PCIe slots in addition to one mini-PCIe slot that ships with a Wifi card included. Furthermore it has a HDMI port (sadly limited to 1366x768 by Intel) and the usual GigE network port and HD audio. We predict that this board will be extremely popular among DIY NAS server builders, due to the 6 SATA ports combined with the low power consumption of the Pineview Atom. The uncommon mini-DTX form factor that this board uses, is compatible with standard mini-ITX screw-holes, the only difference is that the board is slightly wider, which means it requires a case that fits at least a micro-ATX board.

Specification: D510 cpu, 6 SATA ports, 1 eSATA port, 2 DDR2 667/800Mhz DIMM slots (4 GB max), 10 USB 2.0 ports (6 on back-panel, 4 on-board headers), 1 PCIe x16 (single lane) slot, 1 PCIe x1 slot, 1 mini-PCIe x1 slot (occupied by a 802.11 b/g/n WiFi module), HDMI (1366x768 max) and VGA ports, 1 PS/2 port, 1 Gigabit Ethernet port, 5.1 HD audio (line-in, line-out, mic-in, coax and opt. S/PDIF rear ports), mini-DTX form factor

Zotac NM10-ITX WiFi motherboard
Zotac NM10-ITX WiFi
Zotac NM10-ITX WiFi (NM10-A-E) - [Zotac product page]

The Zotac NM10-ITX WiFi is the mini-ITX variant of the NM10-DTX, it differs by offering only 2 SATA ports and only one PCIe x1 slot, but it has 2 mini-PCIe slots, one used for the included Wifi card while the other one could be used by a Broadcom Crystal HD card. With that card, we think this board could make a very good HTPC for anyone who has a 720p HD-TV or projector (due to Intel limiting the GPU to 1366x768 over HDMI).

Specification: D510 cpu, 2 SATA ports, 2 DDR2 667/800Mhz DIMM slots (4 GB max), 8 USB 2.0 ports (6 on back-panel, 2 on-board headers), 1 PCIe x1 slot, 2 mini-PCIe x1 slots (1 occupied by a 802.11 b/g/n WiFi module), HDMI (1366x768 max) and VGA ports, 1 PS/2 port, 1 Gigabit Ethernet port, 5.1 HD audio (line-in, line-out, mic-in, coax and opt. S/PDIF rear ports), mini-ITX form factor
