Intel Pineview Atom based Motherboards
Complete Overview

low cost meets low power consumption and small form factor

first published: 31-Dec-2009 - last update: 20-Jul-2011

The market for low power draw (below 20 Watts), passively cooled, small form factor motherboards was until recently dominated by rather expensive VIA boards and to a smaller extent AMD (with the Geode). Even last years' first generation Intel Atom cpu did not fit into this category, as first generation Intel Atom motherboards (with the commonly used power-hungry Intel 945GC chipset or even with the Nvidia ION) typically consumed 20-35 Watts and therefore usually needed a fan on the chipset (see our detailed TDP comparison).

The new Intel 'Pineview' Atom cpu combined with the new Intel NM10 Express (formerly Tiger Point) single-chip-chipset on the other hand, makes Atom based motherboards that only draw 10-20 Watts a reality, which means they can be passively cooled and used for purposes where they need to be running 24/7, while minimizing the impact on the electricity bill.

Apart from industrial uses, these new Intel 'Pineview' Atom motherboards are ideal in combination with Linux to make small, low power consumption, 24/7 home mail or web servers, BT-clients, file servers (see our example build), home surveillance appliances, routers, firewalls or even small PCs for web browsing and email.

So far Intel has released ten 'Pineview' Atom chips, all are 64-bit capable and incorporate an Intel GMA 3150 graphics processor (GPU):

Total TDP is the TDP (thermal design power) of the Intel Atom cpu and the Intel NM10 Express southbridge (the single-chip-chipset of the Intel Pine Trail platform) combined.

EIST stands for 'Enhanched Intel Speedstep Technology', a technique that adapts the clock speed to the cpu load to reduce power consumption. Only the N-series (netbook) Atom cpus have EIST.

The N-series Atom cpus (N450, N455, N470, N475, N550 and N570) are targeted at netbooks (but there are some motherboards using them anyway), while the D-series Atom cpus (D410, D425, D510 and D525) are meant to be used on mini-ITX motherboards or in nettops or other mini PCs.

The newer N455, N475, D425 and D525 Intel Atoms support both DDR2 and DDR3 RAM, enabling PC manufacturers to choose which RAM technology to support on their mainboards, while the newest Atoms (N550 and N570) only support DDR3 reflecting the fact that DDR2 memory is being phased out.

Here is an overview of all Intel 'Pineview' Atom based motherboards that have been announced or released so far. We aim to keep this list complete and up-to-date, so if you know of any others, please let us know.
Please note this overview is limited to standard PC form factor motherboards (ITX, DTX, ATX and their variants), industrial format boards (SBC, COM Express, PC/104, etc.) will not be listed here.

The Asrock AD410PV / AD510PV are two ordinary single / dual core Intel Atom D410 / D510 based motherboards. Their only claims to fame that we can spot, are the overclocking features in the BIOS and the fact that they claim to support up to 8GB of RAM. They both come with a PCIe Gigabit Ethernet LAN interface on-board.

The Asrock AD425PV / AD525PV are identical to the AD410PV / AD510PV, except that they feature slightly faster Intel Atom D425 / D525 processors.

The Asrock AD425PV3 / AD525PV3 are DDR3-800 RAM variants of the AD425PV / AD525PV boards. They also feature a different audio chip (Realtek ALC662) and a different network controller (Atheros AR8151).

Asus AT5NM10-I motherboard
Asus AT5NM10-I
Asus AT4NM10-I / AT5NM10-I
Asus product pages: [ AT4NM10-I ] [ AT5NM10-I ]

The Asus AT4NM10-I (single core Atom) and AT5NM10-I (dual core Atom) are basic entry level boards similar to the Intel D410PT / D510MO and the Foxconn D41S / D51S. Compared to the Intel D510MO, the AT5NM10-I even lacks the mini-PCIe slot, therefore we could see this board competing only on price, providing it's priced below the Intel board.
That said, the presence of a LVDS header and it's chunky heat-sink could make it interesting for industrial applications.

Earlier revisions of the Asus AT4NM10-I / AT5NM10-I shipped with the slower Atom D410 / D510, while the current revision has the faster Atom D425 / D525.

CeBIT 2010 news: a variant of this board has been spotted at CeBIT, the AT5NM10-I IPC geared explicitly towards industrial applications with 4 RS232 ports (3 rear ports, 1 header), CF-card slot, on-board DC-DC power converter, but without the PCI slot and the rear parallel port.

Specification: D410/D425 or D510/D525 cpu, 2 SATA ports, 1 PCI slot, 2 DDR2 667/800 DIMM slots (4 GB max), VGA port and LVDS header, 2 PS/2 ports, 2 RS232 (1 port and 1 header), 1 parallel port, 8 USB 2.0 ports (4 on back-panel, 4 on-board headers), 1 Gigabit Ethernet port, IDT73C 5.1 HD audio (line-in, line-out, mic-in rear ports, S/PDIF out and front panel header), mini-ITX form factor

Asus AT5NM10T-I
Asus AT4NM10T-I / AT5NM10T-I
Asus product pages: [ AT4NM10T-I ] [ AT5NM10T-I ]

The Asus AT4NM10T-I / AT5NM10T-I are much improved versions of the AT4NM10-I / AT5NM10-I. They now have 4 SATA ports (thanks to an additional JMicron JMB362 controller), a PCIe x4 (1 lane) slot instead of the obsolete PCI slot, and support 2 DDR3-800 So-DIMM memory sticks rather than obsolete DDR2 memory.
The rear I/O panel has been revamped too, the obsolete parallel printer port has been dropped (a pin header is still present on the mobo) and 2 more USB ports have replaced one of the old PS/2 connectors.

Specification: D425 or D525 cpu, 4 SATA ports, 1 PCIe x4 (1 lane) slot, 2 DDR3 800 So-DIMM slots (4 GB max), VGA port and LVDS header, PS/2 port, 2 RS232 (1 port and 1 header), 1 parallel port header, 8 USB 2.0 ports (6 on back-panel, 2 on-board headers), 1 Gigabit Ethernet port (Realtek 8111E), VIA VT1705S 5.1 HD audio (line-in, line-out, mic-in rear ports, S/PDIF out and front panel header), mini-ITX form factor

Asus AT5IONT-I motherboard
Asus AT5IONT-I - click to enlarge
Asus AT5IONT-I / AT5IONT-I Deluxe
Asus product pages: [ AT5IONT-I ] [ AT5IONT-I Deluxe ]

The Asus AT5IONT-I is the second mini-ITX motherboard (after the Jetway NC98) to feature an on-board Nvidia GT218 (a.k.a. ION2) graphics processor, which enables it to decode and play back 1080p Bluray video and 7.1 LPCM digital audio over HDMI, making this board ideal for a small media PC (HTPC) connected to a flat screen TV or video projector.

Besides the ION GPU, it features a top-of-the-range 1.8GHz Atom D525 dual core cpu, a DVI and a HDMI output (with dual display support), an optical S/PDIF port and two USB 3.0 ports. The massive heatsink with triple heat-pipes allows fanless cooling, according to Asus.

The Deluxe version (not available in the US) adds on-board wireless WLAN 802.11n (implemented via a mini-PCIe card and an external WiFi antenna), Bluetooth support and an on-board 12V DC-DC power supply.

Common specification: D525 cpu, 2 SATA ports, 1 eSATA port, 1 PCIe x4 slot (single lane), 2 DDR3 800 SoDIMM slots (4 GB max), Nvidia GT218 (ION2) GPU with 512MB graphics memory, 1 Gigabit Ethernet port, 4 USB 2.0 ports (2 on back-panel, 2 on-board headers), 2 USB 3.0 ports, DVI and HDMI ports, 2 PS/2 ports, ALC887 7.1 HD audio (line-in, line-out, mic-in rear ports, S/PDIF out and front panel header), mini-ITX form factor

Foxconn D41S motherboard
Foxconn D41S
Foxconn D41S / D51S / D42S / D52S / D42S 3.0 / D52S 3.0
Foxconn product pages:
[ D41S ] [ D51S ] [ D42S ] [ D52S ] [ D42S 3.0 ] [ D52S 3.0 ]

The Foxconn D41S is a plain single-core Atom motherboard. It's spec is slightly better than that of the Intel D410PT single-core board, but still nothing to write home about.
The D51S is identical to the D41S apart from the dual-core cpu and the cpu fan. Unfortunately Foxconn has opted for a rather small cpu heat-sink which means a fan is required to keep the cpu cool on the dual-core version.

The D42S / D52S are identical to the D41S / D51S other than for the slightly faster D425 / D525 Atom cpus they use.
The D42S 3.0 / D52S 3.0 are variants of the D42S / D52S that support DDR3-800 RAM instead of DDR2.

Specification: D410 (D41S) / D510 (D51S) / D425 (D42S, D42S 3.0) / D525 (D52S, D52S 3.0) cpu, 1 PCI slot, 2 SATA ports, 2 DDR2 667/800Mhz (DDR3 800MHz on D42S 3.0 / D52S 3.0) DIMM slots (4 GB max), 1 Gigabit Ethernet port, 8 USB ports (4 on back-panel, 4 on-board headers), 2 PS/2 ports, 2 RS232 (1 port and 1 header), 1 IrDA header, 1 TPM header, VGA port, 1 parallel port, 5.1 channel HD audio (line-in, line-out, mic-in rear ports, S/PDIF out and front panel header), mini-ITX form factor

Gigabyte GA-D510UD / GA-D425TUD / GA-D525TUD
Gigabyte product pages: [ GA-D510UD ] [ GA-D425TUD ] [ GA-D525TUD ]

The Gigabyte GA-D510UD / GA-D425TUD / GA-D525TUD are an interesting set of Atom boards, due to the presence of 4 SATA ports (2 from the NM10 chip and another 2 from a JMicron JMB363 chip, a.k.a. Gigabyte SATA2) and a legacy IDE port (could be used for the boot disk or an IDE DOM module), which makes them very suitable to be used in a fileserver. The Gigabyte Ultra Durable 3 Technology, the use of all solid capacitors and the presence of redundant BIOS chips should ensure that these boards will provide many years of reliable service.

Specification: D510 (GA-D510UD) / D425 (GA-D425TUD) / D525 (GA-D525TUD) cpu, 4 SATA ports, 1 IDE connector, 1 PCI slot, 2 (DDR2-667/800 on GA-D510UD, DDR3-800 on GA-D425TUD and GA-D525TUD) DIMM slots (max. 4GB), VGA port, 2 PS/2 ports, 1 Gigabit Ethernet port (RTL8111 chip), 8 USB 2.0 ports (4 on back-panel, 4 on-board headers), 2 RS232 ports (1 on back-panel, 1 on-board header), 1 parallel port, Realtek ALC888B 7.1 HD audio (line-in, line-out, mic-in rear ports, front panel header), mini-ITX form factor

Jetway NC94 Series - [Jetway product page]
( NC94-410-LF / NC94FL-410-LF / NC94-510-LF / NC94FL-510-LF / NC94FL-525LF )

The Jetway NC94 series (available either with a single core Atom D410 or with a dual core Atom D510 or D525) stands out of the crowd thanks to the presence of a PCI-E x16 slot (but with only 4 lanes due to Intel NM10 chipset limitations). The NC94FL variants have a larger heatsink and are therefore passively cooled (FL=fanless). Unfortunately the remaining specs are very average.

Specification: D410 / D510 / D525 cpu, PCI-E x16 slot (4 lanes), 2 SATA ports, 2 DDR2 667/800Mhz DIMM slots (4 GB max), 10/100 Fast Ethernet port (Intel 82552V), 1 floppy connector, 8 USB ports (4 on back-panel, 4 on-board headers), VGA port + LVDS header, 2 PS/2 ports, 2 RS232 (1 port and 1 header), 1 parallel port, Realtek ALC662 5.1 HD audio (line-in, line-out, mic-in rear ports and CD-in + front panel header), mini-ITX form factor

( NC96-410-LF / NC96FL-410-LF / NC96-510-LF / NC96FL-510-LF / NC96FL-525-LF )

The Jetway NC96 series (available either with a single core Atom D410 or with a dual core Atom D510 or D525) is packed with interesting features such as 4 SATA ports in addition to an IDE connector (2 SATA ports are from the Intel NM10, the other two and the IDE port are controlled by a JMicron JMB363 chip), a mini-PCIe connector and a GigE network port.
It could have been perfect as a NAS file server board, if the Jetway engineers hadn't decided to put a DC-DC converter on-board, which makes it very hard to power 4 hard disks off it.
The NC96FL variants have a larger heatsink and are therefore passively cooled (FL=fanless).

Specification: D410 / D510 / D525 cpu, 1 mini-PCIe x1 connector, 1 PCI slot, 4 SATA ports, 44-pin IDE connector, 2 DDR2 667/800Mhz DIMM slots (4 GB max), 1 Gigabit Ethernet port (RTL8111DL), 10 USB ports (4 on back-panel, 6 on-board headers), VGA port + LVDS header, 2 PS/2 ports, 2 RS232 (1 port and 1 header), Realtek ALC662 5.1 HD audio (line-in, line-out, mic-in rear ports and CD-in + front panel header), 1 parallel port, 12V DC-in, IDE power connector, mini-ITX form factor

( NC98-510-LF / NC98-525E-LF )

The Jetway NC98 series (available either with a dual core Atom D510 or a D525) is the first mini-ITX motherboard to feature an on-board Nvidia GT218 (a.k.a. ION2) graphics processor. This enables it to decode and play back 1080p Bluray video and 7.1 LPCM digital audio over HDMI, making this board ideal for a small media PC (HTPC) connected to a flat screen TV or video projector.
Apart from that, there are 4 SATA connectors (2 from the Intel NM10 southbridge and 2 from a JMicron JMB362 chip), on board 12V DC-DC converters, HDMI, DVI and VGA video outputs, a mini-PCIe slot and a gigabit Ethernet network port.

Specification: D510 / D525 cpu, Nvidia GT218 (ION2) GPU with 512MB DDR2 graphics memory, 1 mini-PCIe x1 connector, 4 SATA ports, 2 DDR2 667/800Mhz DIMM slots (4 GB max), 1 Gigabit Ethernet port (RTL8111DL), VGA + DVI + HDMI video ports, 2 PS/2 ports, 1 RS232 header, 7 USB ports (4 on back-panel, 3 on-board headers), Realtek ALC662 5.1 HD audio (line-in, line-out, mic-in rear ports and CD-in + front panel header), Nvidia LPCM 7.1 digital audio (HDMI 1.3), 12V DC-in, IDE power connector, mini-ITX form factor

Jetway NF96FL-510-LF
Jetway NF96 Series - [Jetway product page]
( NF96FL-410-LF / NF96FL-510-LF / NF96FL-525-LF )

The Jetway NF96 series (available either with a single core Atom D410 or with a dual core Atom D510 or D525) uses the Intel ICH8M Southbridge instead of the standard NM10 Express. It also has a DC-DC converter on-board which means it can be powered by a silent external power brick.
The presence of a Jetway daughter board connector is an interesting feature that allows expanding the motherboard with extra ports, such as LVDS, VGA, RS232 and up to 3 extra Ethernet ports.

Specification: D410 / D510 / D525 cpu, 1 mini-PCIe x1 connector, 1 PCI slot, 2 SATA ports, 44-pin IDE connector, 2 DDR2 667/800Mhz DIMM slots (4 GB max), 1 Gigabit Ethernet port (RTL8111DL), 9 USB ports (5 on back-panel, 4 on-board headers), VGA port + LVDS header, 1 PS/2 port, 2 RS232 (1 port and 1 header), 1 E-SATA port, Realtek ALC662 5.1 HD audio (line-in, line-out, mic-in rear ports and CD-in + front panel header), 1 parallel port, 12V DC in, IDE power connector, Jetway daughter board connector, mini-ITX form factor

Point of View MB-D510-MITX - [PoV product page]
(OEM version of the Pegatron IPXPV)

The Point of View MB-D510-MITX is an ordinary Pineview board comparable to the Intel Mount Olive board, apart from the fact that it has a PCIe x1 slot instead of a normal PCI slot. This allows Point of View to optionally bundle a Nvidia GeForce G210 (ION2) PCI-E 1x graphics card (512MB, SDDR3) with this board, making it more powerful then any of the Atom 330 + Nvidia ION boards that are so popular as small silent media PCs.

Specification: D510 cpu, 2 SATA ports, 1 PCIe x1 slot, 2 DDR2 667/800 DIMM slots, VGA port, 2 PS/2 ports, 1 Gigabit Ethernet port, 1 parallel port, 2 RS232 (1 port and 1 header), 8 USB 2.0 ports (4 on back-panel, 4 on-board headers), 5.1 HD audio (line-in, line-out, mic-in rear ports, front panel header and S/PDIF header), mini-ITX form factor

Zotac NM10-DTX WiFi motherboard
Zotac NM10-DTX WiFi
Zotac NM10-DTX WiFi (NM10-B-E / NM10-B-E-ION)
Zotac product pages: [ NM10-B-E ] [ NM10-B-E-ION ]
(This board is also known as: Manli M-INM10WF-D)

The Zotac NM10-DTX WiFi is the first Pineview Atom board that got us all enthusiastic!
Zotac has really taken the Pine Trail platform to it's limits by offering 6 SATA connectors (and to top it off even one eSATA port!) and 2 PCIe slots in addition to one mini-PCIe slot that ships with a Wifi card included. Furthermore it has a HDMI port (sadly limited to 1366x768 by Intel) and the usual GigE network port and HD audio. We predict that this board will be very popular among DIY NAS server builders, due to the 6 SATA ports combined with the low power consumption of the Pineview Atom. The uncommon mini-DTX form factor that this board uses, is compatible with standard mini-ITX screw-holes, the only difference is that the board is slightly wider, which means it requires a mini-ITX case that has 33mm more space next to the expansion card slot.
Update: it has emerged that the 4 extra SATA ports can apparently only be used in RAID mode, not as plain disks, this severely limits their use in Linux where Linux software RAID would be the better choice.

The NM10-B-E-ION (a.k.a. ZOTAC NM10-DTX ION Upgrade Kit) is simply a NM10-DTX board with a bundled low-profile Nvidia ION2 PCIe x1 graphics card, featuring 16 shaders, a core clock of 589MHz, a shader clock of 1.4GHz and 512MB of dedicated 64-bit DDR3 RAM clocked at 790MHz.

Specification: D510 cpu, 6 SATA ports, 1 eSATA port, 2 DDR2 667/800Mhz DIMM slots (4 GB max), 10 USB 2.0 ports (6 on back-panel, 4 on-board headers), 1 PCIe x16 (single lane) slot, 1 PCIe x1 slot, 1 mini-PCIe x1 slot (occupied by a 802.11 b/g/n WiFi module), HDMI (1366x768 max) and VGA ports, 1 PS/2 port, 1 Gigabit Ethernet port, 5.1 HD audio (line-in, line-out, mic-in, coax and opt. S/PDIF rear ports), mini-DTX form factor (203 x 170 mm)

Zotac product pages: [ NM10-A-E ] [ NM10-A-E-ION ]
(This board is also known as: Manli M-INM10WF-I)

The Zotac NM10-ITX WiFi is the mini-ITX variant of the NM10-DTX, it differs by offering only 2 SATA ports and only one PCIe x1 slot, but it has 2 mini-PCIe slots, one used for the included Wifi card while the other one could be used by a Broadcom Crystal HD card. With that card, we think this board could make a very good HTPC for anyone who has a 720p HD-TV or projector (due to Intel limiting the GPU to 1366x768 over HDMI).

As with the NM10-B-E-ION, the NM10-A-E-ION (a.k.a. ZOTAC NM10-ITX ION Upgrade Kit) is simply a NM10-ITX board with a bundled low-profile Nvidia ION2 PCIe x1 graphics card.

Specification: D510 cpu, 2 SATA ports, 2 DDR2 667/800Mhz DIMM slots (4 GB max), 8 USB 2.0 ports (6 on back-panel, 2 on-board headers), 1 PCIe x1 slot, 2 mini-PCIe x1 slots (1 occupied by a 802.11 b/g/n WiFi module), HDMI (1366x768 max) and VGA ports, 1 PS/2 port, 1 Gigabit Ethernet port, 5.1 HD audio (line-in, line-out, mic-in, coax and opt. TDP Comparison of Atom Platforms
the ultimate overview

Intel Atom 330 dual core cpu + Intel 945GC northbridge + Intel ICH7 southbridge:

This is the typical first generation Atom platform as recommended by Intel and used on most first generation Atom motherboards.

Component TDP
Atom 330 cpu 8 Watts
945GC northbridge 22.2 Watts
ICH7 southbridge 3.3 Watts
Total TDP 33.5 Watts

Intel Atom D510 / D525 dual core cpu + Intel NM10 Express southbridge:

This is the typical second generation Atom platform as recommended by Intel and used on most boards listed here on this page. The difference in TDP compared to the first generation is very noticeable (remember the cpu now incorporates the functionality of a complete northbridge, too!).

Component TDP
Atom D510 / D525 cpu 13 Watts
NM10 Express southbridge 2 Watts
Total TDP 15 Watts

Intel Atom 330 dual core cpu + Nvidia ION (GF9400M) chipset:

This is the first generation Nvidia ION platform, that has revolutionized the HTPC market and provided a much better alternative to the anemic and inefficient Intel 945GC+ICH7 chipset (see also our separate Nvidia ION overview).

Component TDP
Atom 330 cpu 8 Watts
Nvidia ION chipset 12 Watts
Total TDP 20 Watts

Intel Atom D510 / D525 dual core cpu + Nvidia ION2 (GT218) GPU + Intel NM10 Express southbridge:

This is the typical second generation Nvidia ION platform. Since Intel incorporated the northbridge into the cpu, Nvidia was unable to provide a chipset for the second generation Atom, therefore they simply provide a graphics processor that is connected to the NM10 Express via a PCIe x1 lane.

Component TDP
Atom D510 / D525 cpu 13 Watts
NM10 Express southbridge 2 Watts
Nvidia ION2 GPU 13 Watts
Total TDP 28 Watts
